Muscle

A muscle is a contractile tissue in the body which is used especially for movement.

The word "muscle" comes from the Latin word "musculus," which means "little mouse." This may be because contracting muscles look like mice moving under the skin.

HUMAN MUSCLES

200 muscles are used to take just one step.

Humans use a total of 72 different muscles in speech.

The muscles in your eyes and tongue are constantly moving, even when you sleep.

The six muscles in each of your eyes move faster than any other muscles in your body.

If you were capable of hearing frequencies lower than 20 Hz, you would hear your muscles moving.

The strongest muscle in the human body is our jaw muscle, the masseter.

The smallest muscle in your body, found in the middle ear, dampens the sound of your own voice when you speak.

There are no muscles in human fingers. The muscles that move them are actually located in your palm and forearm.

It takes 17 muscles to smile.

It takes 43 muscles to frown.

Kissing predominately uses one muscle called the orbicularis oris, which is responsible for puckering one's lips while smooching.

Paralysed by motor neuron disease, the physicist Stephen Hawking communicates using a single cheek muscle attached to a speech-generating device.

Human muscles are limited by our brain, we actually have the strength to move cars and boulders.

ANIMAL MUSCLES

A cat has 32 muscles in each ear.

Bumblebees can fly at up to 30mph. The buzz is produced by their flight muscles.

The caterpillar has more than 2000 muscles

An elephant trunk has around 100,000 muscles and tendons.
