The house at 3 Abbey Road, London was bought by EMI in 1929 for £100,000. It was converted into the world's first custom-built recording studios.
Pathé filmed the opening of the studios on November 12, 1931 when Sir Edward Elgar conducted the London Symphony Orchestra in recording sessions of his music.
The Beatles used Abbey Road for 90% of their recordings, naming an album after the studios in 1969.
Sam Phillips, a radio engineer at Memphis radio station WREC-AM, opened Sun Studio along with his good friend and assistant, Marion Keister on January 3, 1951.
Originally named Memphis Recording Service, the famous Sun Studio was located at 706 Union Avenue, Memphis, Tennessee. The studio was to be the home of future recordings from Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis, among others.
Music producer and songwriter Berry Gordy founded Motown Records in 1959. The same year he purchased the wood-framed house at 2648 West Grand Boulevard, Detroit that would become Motown's headquarters. The photography studio located in the back of the property was modified into a small recording studio, and the Gordys moved into the second-floor living quarters. There was a sign above the door that read ‘Hitsville USA’. Within seven years, Motown would occupy seven additional neighboring houses.
The Hitsville studios remained open and active 22 hours a day, and the Motown artists would often go on tour for weeks, come back to Detroit to record as many songs as possible, and then promptly go on tour again.
Chris Hadfield was the first person to record a song in space. The Canadian astronaut won fans around the world for his renditions of pop songs, including David Bowie’s "Space Oddity", on the International Space Station in 2013.
