Victor Hugo's novel,
The Hunchback of Notre-Dame, was first published in France on January 14, 1831 and was quickly translated into other languages across Europe. The success of the book inspired a renewed appreciation for pre-Renaissance buildings, which thereafter began to be actively preserved. It especially shamed the city of Paris into restoring the much-neglected Cathedral of Notre Dame, which was attracting thousands of tourists who had read the popular novel.
