Abraham Lincoln was urged to grow a beard, in order to look more dignified. Lincoln objected, not liking hair under his chin, calling it "a piece of silly affection". He was persuaded in part thanks to a letter dated October 15, 1860 from 11-year-old Grace Bedell suggesting that the presidential candidate grow a beard.
