Anagram

Am anagram is a transposition of the letters of a word or phrase to form a new word or phrase.

Anagrams can be traced back to the time of the ancient Greeks, and were used to find the hidden and mystical meaning in names.

Some historians claim anagrams originated in the 3rd century BC with the Greek poet Lycophron who lived in Alexandria at the palace of King Ptolemy Philadelphus (285-247BC). In a poem on the siege of Troy entitled Cassandra, Lycophron included anagrams of the names of Ptolemy and his queen, Arsinoe.

They were popular throughout Europe during the Middle Ages. The medieval philosophic doctrine of cabalism attached great importance to anagrams, asserting some relation between them and the character or destiny of the persons from whose names they were formed.
