American Football Teams

The Green Bay Packers were named for a mere $500 in sponsorship from the Indian Packing Company in 1919. The future NFL team’s co-founder, Earl Lambeau worked for the packing company at the time.

The Brooklyn Dodgers began play in 1930 after two New York businessmen bought the Dayton Triangles for $2,500 and moved the NFL franchise to Ebbets Field.  Their name stems from a nickname given in the 1890s to people who, in a matter of life and death, had to evade railcars speeding down the streets. They were known as trolley dodgers.

In 1957, 102,368 people attended the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams game. The crowd was the largest regular-season crowd in NFL history.

The Dallas Cowboys were originally called the Dallas Steers. Deciding it better not to have a castrated animal serving as the team's mascot, Cowboys general manager Tex Schramm changed the name firstly to the Ranger then once again to Cowboys just before the 1960 season began.

On January 14, 1973 Miami Dolphins achieved the first and so far only undefeated NFL season after narrowly beating the Washington Redskins 14-7 at Super Bowl VII. The 1972 Dolphins went 14–0 in the regular season and won all three postseason games, including Super Bowl VII, to finish 17–0.

The Green Bay Packers is the only non-profit, community-owned major league professional sports team in the United States.

Green Bay, Wisconsin has a population of 100,000 - despite this every Packers home game has been sold out since 1960 and the wait time for season tickets is 30 years.

According to Forbes, all 32 American NFL teams were in the Top 50 richest sports clubs in the world in 2013, making the NFL easily the wealthiest sports league in the world.
