Comic

The first children’s comic, an eight page version called Comic Cuts was first published on May 17, 1890. Its debut issue was an assortment of reprints from American publications.

Comic Cuts was published from 1890 to 1953, lasting 3006 issues, and in its early days inspired other publishers to produce rival comics. It finally disappeared in September 1953 when it was merged with Knockout.

Comic Cuts held the record for the most issues of a British weekly comic for 46 years, until The Dandy overtook it in 1999.

The Lancashire vicar Marcus Morris, concerned at the growing popularity of American horror comics amongst children, founded the Eagle comic, which aimed to combine high moral values with the stories of space heroes such as Dan Dare. The first issue, which appeared on April 14, 1950, cost 3d and sold 900,000 copies. The comic lasted 19 years and 991 issues.
