Eggplant

Eggplant is also known as aubergine, melongene, brinjal or guinea squash.

Dark eggplant skins were historically used by aristocratic women in China to make black dye, which they often used to stain their teeth.

Because of the plant's relationship with the nightshade family, the fruit was at one time believed to be extremely poisonous.  The Romans called aubergine "mala insana" ("mad apple") thinking it poisonous and liable to derive a person mad. The Italian for aubergine is still "melanzana".

The Italian for eggplant is “melanzana”, from “mela insana”, meaning “crazy apple”. This came from a belief that eggplants can drive you mad.

China is the top producer providing 58% of the world's output of eggplant.
