Eyelash

The Libyan ostrich, the hornbill and the blue-fronted Amazon parrot are the only birds with eyelashes.

In ancient Egypt, priests plucked every hair from their bodies, including their eyebrows and eyelashes.

False eyelashes were invented by film director D.W. Griffith while he was making the 1916 epic, Intolerance. He wanted actress Seena Owen to have lashes that brushed her cheeks.

To 'bat your lashes' is slang dating back to the 1920s meaning to make eyes at someone. The expression came from the huge false eyelashes that were in vogue at the time, which looked like bats when a girl fluttered her eyelids.

The average length eyelashes grow to is 10mm. This depends upon your genetics and even on the diet of your mother when she was pregnant with you.

The Guinness world record for the world’s most lengthy eyelash is credited to Stuart Muller of Florida. Sprouting from his left upper eyelid, Stuart’s record-breaking eyelash measured 6.99cm.

Right now there are microscopic bugs living on your eyelashes.

The lifespan of an eyelash is approximately five months.
