In 1955 Soviet geologists discovered the Mir mine, the first diamond mine in the USSR and the second largest excavated hole in the world, in Eastern Siberia.
Drilling began on May 24 1970 on the Kola Peninsula in Russia, of the Kola Superdeep Borehole. It eventually reached 12,262 meters (40,230 ft), making it the deepest hole ever drilled and the deepest artificial point on Earth.
The Kola Borehole, has been abandoned since 2006 and only a small metal wield covers the 40,000 ft+ hole.
The world's deepest swimming hole, located in Brussels, Belgium. Nemo 33 is a submerged structure with platforms at various levels that plummet down 108 feet. It holds 2,500,000 liters of non-chlorinated spring water that stays 86 degrees.
