Jezebel

Jezebel was a princess of Tyre in Old Testament times who married Ahab, the King of Israel in around 870BC. She was a pagan Baal-worshipper and led the King and people away from the Jewish God.

Jezebel persecuted the prophets of Jehovah, having many of them killed, and came into conflict with Elijah.

She met her death by being thrown from the palace window by supporters of Jehu, who had become King after the downfall of Ahab. A pack of dogs come and eats her fulfilling the prophet Elijah's prophecy that "the dogs shall eat Jezebel by the wall of Jezreel."

Such was her rank bad character, that historically in Christian countries, a shameless, painted woman has traditionally been called a "Jezebel."

Bette Davis starred as an antebellum Southern belle named Julie in New Orleans, Louisiana, in the 1938 movie Jezebel (1938). Her aunt says the young woman Julie makes her aunt think of "Jezebel, a woman who did evil in the sight of the Lord."
