Molecule

Molecules are made up of atoms that are stuck together in a particular shape or form. It is the smallest amount of a chemical substance that can exist.

For a molecule to exist, atoms have to stick together. This happens when two atoms share electrons. Instead of circling just one atom, the electron now circles around two. This is called bonding.

Oxygen atoms always have two bonds with other atoms, carbon atoms always have four bonds with other atoms, and nitrogen atoms always have three bonds with other atoms.

The molecular formula of glucose is C6H12O6. That means that one molecule of glucose is made up of six carbon atoms, twelve hydrogen atoms and six oxygen atoms.

The picture below is of a sugar molecule. Carbon atoms are made blue, oxygen atoms are made red and hydrogen atoms are made white to show the difference. In reality atoms do not have a color.




In 1905 Albert Einstein received his doctorate from the University of Zurich for a theoretical dissertation on the dimensions of molecules.

 In 2012 a 10-year-old accidentally created a new molecule in science class — Tetranitratoxycarbon.

There are more molecules of H2O in 10 drops of water than stars in the universe.

If you laid all the molecules in a teaspoon of water end to end, it would stretch ten times the width of the solar system.


Even when all the molecules in a single breath of air have been dispersed evenly in the Earth's atmosphere, there will still be one or two of the same ones taken into the lungs with every subsequent breath. Every time you breathe in, you inhale one or two of the same molecules that you inhaled with the first breath you took as a baby.

Graphene, a two-dimensional molecule one atom thick, conducts electricity better than the most conductive metal.
