Nudity

The earliest known European statue of a female nude is the Willendorf Venus, dated to between 22,000 and 30,000 years ago.

The ancient Egyptians wore the minimum of clothing and children went without clothing until puberty, at about age 12. Women entertainers performed naked.

In AD 380 the church issued a law specifically forbidding anyone to read the Bible whilst naked. People had been trying to emulate the innocence of Adam and Eve by taking their clothes off before services.

The modern Age of Nudity began in 1933 when dancer Sally Rand took it all off at the Chicago Century of Progress Exhibition. She kept the police away by holding two fans in front of her while she danced.

When otherwise unknown actress Maggie Wright, playing Helen of Troy in an Royal Shakespeare Company production of Dr Faustus in 1968, she became the first woman to appear nude on the mainstream UK stage.

When the actor Burt Reynolds appeared nude in a Cosmopolitan centerfold in 1972 he became the first man to pose naked for a magazine.

Infamous streaker, Mark Roberts, was sponsored by GoldenPalace.com to streak Super Bowl XXXVIII between the New England Patriots and Carolina Panthers. He was paid $1 million, given front row tickets on the 50-yard line, and provided with one of the best defense attorneys in the US who was able to reduce his charges down to a misdemeanor and $1,000 fine.

 Driving naked in Germany is legal. But if you get out of the car nude, you face a $45 fine.
