Ed Sheeran

 EARLY LIFE

Ed Sheeran was born in Halifax, West Yorkshire, England on February 17,  1991. His father John is an art curator and lecturer, his mother Imogen designs jewellery and his brother Matthew is a classical music composer, who helped him on the orchestrated  remix of "Perfect."

Ed's first guitar was given to him as a gift by his uncle. Ed initially taught himself, before going on to have proper music lessons.

Ed spent most of his childhood years in the English countryside town of Framlingham, Suffolk, before moving to London at the age of 17 to pursue a music career.

CAREER BEGINNINGS

Sheeran started recording music in 2005, and released his first EP, The Orange Room, that same year.

After Sheeran moved to London, he began to tour relentlessly. At first he was homeless, sleeping on fans' sofas every night after his gigs. Sometimes, Sheeran would finish a concert, stay up drinking into the early hours, wait until 5am for the tube to open and then get four hours’ sleep on the Circle Line.

Over the course of 2009, Ed Sheeran played in more than 300 live shows and gigs throughout the UK while trying to get noticed.

INTERNATIONAL SUCCESS

The first of Sheeran’s big breaks came in 2010, when he played some open mic nights in Los Angeles. He was spotted by Jamie Foxx and landed a slot on the actor’s radio show. Sheeran ended up hanging out in Foxx’s Hollywood mansion as the major labels began circling.

Sheeran signed for Atlantic Records in January 2011 and released "The A Team" as the first single from his debut album on June 12, 2011.

"The A Team" is a true story, which was written by Sheehan after meeting a girl called Angel, whilst volunteering at a Crisis homeless shelter. The song became the highest selling debut single on the UK singles charts in the first half of 2011.

Ed Sheeran's childhood friend, Amy Wadge, couldn't pay her mortgage, so Ed let his pal co-write "Thinking Out Loud" to earn her some money. She certainly was able to pay off more than her mortgage as the song topped the UK singles chart and reached the top 10 of other tallies throughout the world.

In 2015, Ed Sheeran set a new record for most consecutive weeks on the UK Top 40 (one single) when "Thinking Out Loud", broke the record of 49, set by Pharrell Williams in 2014 with "Happy".

On January 9, 2017, "Shape of You," the joint lead single from Ed Sheeran's third album ÷ (Divide) became the most streamed track on Spotify in 24 hours when it racked up 7.24 million streams. This  smashed Spotify's previous 24-hour streaming record, set on July 31, 2015 by One Direction's "Drag Me Down", with 4.75 million streams.

With the initial release of "Shape of You" and "Castle on the Hill", Sheeran also became both the first act to debut in UK Top 10 with two singles simultaneously and the first act to debut on the US Top 10 with two singles simultaneously.

Ed Sheeran broke his own record when Divide was released on March 3, 2017. "Shape Of You" was streamed 10.12m times on Spotify in the 24 hours after the album was made available on the platform.

"Shape Of You" became the most streamed song on Spotify in September 2017, reaching 1,318,420,396 streams overtaking Drake's "One Dance". On January 1, 2023, Spotify announced The Weeknd's "Blinding Lights" had surpassed "Shape Of You" to become the platform's most-streamed song.

Divide enjoyed unprecedented success, notching up a string of impressive world records from when it was released on  March 3, 2017. The long-player debuted at #1 on that week's UK Official Albums Chart and became the the fastest-selling pop album in the UK by a male artist of all time. With a staggering 672,000 first-week sales and downloads, it sold more copies in its first week than the rest of the UK's Top 500 albums combined.

All 16 tracks from the deluxe edition of Divide crashed into the UK Top 20 the week the album was released– a feat which has earned Sheeran the record for most simultaneous UK Top 20 singles. The previous UK record was five simultaneous Top 20 songs, shared by Ruby Murray (1955), Bill Haley and his Comets (1956), Elvis Presley (1957) and Michael Jackson (2009).

On December 4, 2017, Sheeran was named Spotify's most streamed artist of the year with 6.3 billion streams.

Sheeran's two-year Divide world tour made history becoming the most-attended and highest-grossing tour of all time.

Ed Sheeran never sells front row seats in order to see the real fans right in front of him. He gives them away to random fans outside so the front row isn't always just wealthy people.

Sheeran has also written or co-written songs for other international stars, including One Direction, Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber and Eminem.

Ed Sheeran had never achieved any success before his music career. "It’s just because I’ve never been good at anything before," he told The Big Issue. "I never won anything at sports, any academic award."

PERSONAL LIFE

He was born without an eardrum in one of his ears. Sheeran got it replaced when he was 11, and it's since burst a couple of times. He also grew up with a squint, a stutter and a port-wine birthmark (later lasered off) around one eye.

Sheeran wrote "Thinking Out Loud" about his girlfriend at the time, Athina Andrelos, who worked for English celebrity chef Jamie Oliver. The pair split up in early 2015 after dating for about a year.

Ed Sheeran has Cherry Seaborn since they both attended Thomas Mills High School in Framlington, Suffolk. They began dating in 2015 and their relationship blossomed after the singer took time out after spending years on the road. They secretly married in 2018 and welcomed their first child, Lyra, two years later.

He has over 60 tattoos. Almost all of Sheeran’s many inkings have some link to his career thus far-like performing in new places or releasing a successful single.

Ed Sheeran is very fond of ketchup. From his Heinz Ketchup label tattoo to saying he would take a lifetime supply of the sweet and tangy sauce if he was stranded on a desert island,, he's not shy about expressing his love for the condiment.

He relaxes by playing Lego. Sheeran celebrated when he got the news that he'd scored his first #1 album with + by purchasing a Lego Star Wars Millennium Falcon. That night, together with his pal, One Direction's Harry Styles, they spent the night building spaceships with the colored bricks.
