Typing

On average, the average person's left hand does 56% of the typing.

The longest "left handed" words on a keyboard are "aftercataracts" and "tesseradecades."

The longest common words that can be typed on the top row of a keyboard are 'proprietor', 'repertoire', 'perpetuity' and 'typewriter' itself.

Contrary to popular belief, the QWERTY keyboard layout actually increases typing speed by placing commonly used letters far apart to encourage use of both hands efficiently.

On an average work day, a typist's fingers travel 12.6 miles.

Margaret Owen of New York City set a typing speed record of 170 words a minute in 1918.

The fastest typing speed ever of 216 words per minute, was achieved by Stella Pajunas-Garnand from Chicago in 1946 on an IBM electric typewriter.

Currently, the fastest English language typist is writer Barbara Blackburn, who according to The Guinness Book of World Records reached a peak typing speed of 212 wpm during a test in 2005. She had maintained 150 wpm for 50 minutes, and 170 wpm for shorter periods.

The Guinness World Record for typing a given 103 character text on a keyboard using only the nose is 46.30 seconds.

The world record for typing the English alphabet from A to Z is 1.36 seconds.

At 5:00 a.m. on November 11, 1918 French Army clerk Henri Deledicq finished typing the peace treaty that would end World War I. He had put the carbon paper in backwards. Ten minutes later, in a railroad car in France, military leaders signed copies of an armistice that were completely unreadable.

Stanley Kubrick recorded a typist hammering out "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy" for The Shining. He did this because he believed each typewriter key made a slightly different sound and he wanted the movie's audio track to be perfectly accurate.

A court reporter must type around 200 WPM on a stenograph to become certified. In comparison, the average WPM on a standard keyboard is around 40.

Typing Day is held on January 8 every year as one week after New Year is a good time to think through and write down plans for the year.
