HUMAN URINE
Cato the Elder, a Roman senator and historian, died in 149 BC. He recommended everyone bathing in the urine of those who ate cabbage, so that ‘they will never be weakly'. It worked for him: he lived to the ripe old age of 85.
Urine contains high levels of ammonia, which breaks down grease and organic fats. Roman emperor Vespasian levied a tax on urine in the 1st century AD. Urine at that time was collected at public toilets and used as a source of ammonia for bleaching togas and laundering garments.
Before blood glucose tests were available, doctors would taste the urine of their patients to diagnose diabetes. A sweet taste meant the patient was diabetic.

Hennig Brand, a German alchemist in the 1660s, was convinced he could distill gold from human urine. After amassing 1,500 gallons of urine and boiling it, he discovered the element phosphorus.
