Chateau

The term 'chateau' comes from French-speaking regions and is used most often for buildings in these regions. The word is not used in the same way as "castle" is in English, and most châteaux are more appropriately described as "palaces" or "country houses" in English than as "castles".

King Richard I of England built the massive Chateau Gaillard at Les Andelys, Normandy, 50 miles north west of Paris. It was built into the rocks overlooking the Seine river in Normandy, France. When it was completed it was considered to be the greatest castle of its day.

There are 40,000 chateaux in France.
