Ray Repp is a Roman Catholic singer-songwriter credited with introducing folk music into Catholic masses with his 1965 album Mass for Young Americans that formed the earliest stirrings of Contemporary Christian music.
In the late 1960s few Christians believed that the sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll ethos of much of the then music scene was compatible with their Christian faith, and Christian music tended to be closer to folk and country to rock.
However there were a few Christian artists who were pioneering a Christian form of rock music. The daddy of them all was Larry Norman who in 1969 released the first ever Christian rock album, Upon This Rock.
In 1975 Radio stations specializing in Christian Contemporary Music began broadcasting in America.
Stryper's 1984 The Yellow and Black Attack was the first Christian metal album and set the stage for later Christian artists in punk, hip hop and other genres.
