Russell Crowe

Russell Crowe was born in Wellington, New Zealand on April 7, 1964. When Crowe was four years old, his family moved to Sydney, Australia.

Both Russell Crowe's parents were movie set caterers; his father also managed a hotel.

Crowe's maternal grandfather was a cinematographer who was named an MBE for filming footage of World War II.

Crowe attended Auckland Grammar School with his cousins New Zealand cricketers Martin Crowe and Jeff Crowe.

After appearing in the TV series Neighbours and Living with the Law, Crowe was cast by Faith Martin in his first film, The Crossing (1990), a small-town love triangle directed by George Ogilvie.

During filming for Gladiator, Crowe cracked a hip bone, broke a foot bone, and popped a few bicep tendons out of their sockets.

Following the successful release of Gladiator, the FBI warned Russell Crowe that the al-Qaeda were planning to kidnap him as part of a "cultural destabilization plot". For nearly two years, the FBI guarded the actor in public and refused to give him any details about the threat.

Russell Crowe learnt to play the violin for Master and Commander and said it was the hardest thing he's had to do for a movie.

Crowe received three consecutive best actor Oscar nominations, for The Insider, Gladiator and A Beautiful Mind, winning the Academy Award in 2000 for Gladiator.


Russell Crowe's rock group is named 30 Odd Foot of Grunts. They played their first US concert following Russell's success in Gladiator in Austin, Texas in August 2000. The tickets for the concert were selling for over $500 on e-bay.com.

Michael Jackson used to prank call Russell Crowe . Somehow, the King of Pop found out the fake name that Crowe stayed under at hotels and that he prank called him on a regular basis for two or three years.

In June 2005, Crowe was arrested and charged with second-degree assault by New York City police. The actor was taken into custody after he threw a telephone at an employee of the Mercer Hotel who refused to help him place a call when the system did not work from his room.

Russell Crowe drunkenly bought a dinosaur skull from Leonardo DiCaprio for $30,000 in 2008 after a night of heavy drinking.
