Jane Fonda (born December 21, 1937) is the daughter of Henry Fonda, the sister of Peter Fonda and aunt of Bridget Fonda - all of whom were/are actors.
Jane was sent to boarding school after her mother killed herself. Suffering nightmares, Jane wrote to her father, who returned the letters with her grammatical errors highlighted in red ink, refusing ever to discuss the suicide.
Fonda attended Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York, but dropped out to become a fashion model.
When Fonda was a student at Vassar College, she arrived to tea one day improperly dressed. She was sent to her room and told to come back wearing the requisite gloves and pearls. When Fonda reappeared, she was wearing only the aforementioned gloves and pearls.
Fonda made her screen debut in 1960 in the comedy drama Tall Story. Producer/director Joshua Logan was a good friend of her father, Henry Fonda, and saw Jane as a potential major star.
Jane Fonda was arrested in 1970 after allegedly kicking a cop when she was found carrying a large amount of what appeared to be pills. All charges were dropped after the pills were identified as vitamins.
Fonda's counterculture era opposition to the Vietnam War included her being photographed sitting on an anti-aircraft battery during a 1972 visit to Hanoi. The exploit caused her to be dubbed ‘Hanoi Jane.’
Fonda was a skilled ballerina until her 40s, but in 1978 she broke her foot and never bothered the barre again.
To stay in shape after giving up ballet, Fonda took up aerobics. This led to the 17 million-selling Jane Fonda's Workout video series.
