The Open Golf Championship, the annual British golfing championship, was first contested at Prestwick, South Ayrshire, Scotland on October 17, 1860. The competition was opened to both professionals and amateurs the following year.
The first US Open Men's Golf Championship, administered by the United States Golf Association, was played at the Newport Country Club in Newport, Rhode Island on October 4, 1895. It was a one-day event played immediately after the three-day U.S. Amateur, which received much more attention at the time.
The first US Open Men's Golf Championship was won by English professional golfer Horace Thomas Rawlins by two strokes over 36 holes. He won $150 plus a $50 gold medal and the Open Championship Cup, which went to his club.
The first PGA Championship was held in 1916.
The first year tickets were sold for the US Open Men's Golf Championship was 1922. The price of a single day ticket was $1.
The Masters Golf Tournament was the idea of the former leading US amateur golfer Robert Tyre ('Bobby') Jones (1902-71), who lived in Georgia. American Horton Smith won the first Masters Golf Tournament under the magnolia trees of Augusta National in 1934.
The British Open is now played over 72 holes at a different venue each year. All courses are seaside links.
