Grammy Award

Originally called the Gramophone awards, the first Grammys were handed out on May 4, 1959, to honor the musical accomplishments by performers for the year 1958. The ceremony was hosted by comedian Mort Sahl and held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California.

The Grammy Awards were nearly called the Eddies after phonograph inventor Thomas Edison.

Ella Fitzgerald along with Count Basie became the first African American singers to win Grammy Awards at the first annual ceremony. In fact, Fitzgerald won two awards at the inaugural event, one for Best Jazz Performance.

The first Grammy Awards presentation to be televised was in 1971. The ABC broadcast remains the highest-rated Grammy telecast of all time.

The only Grammy Award to ever be revoked was Milli Vanilli's win for Best New Artist in 1990. The award was taken back when it was revealed that the duo did not actually sing on their album.

Country singer LeAnn Rimes was the youngest person to win a Grammy Award, securing the designation as Best New Artist in 1997 at the age of 14.

Blues pianist Pinetop Perkins became the oldest winner of a Grammy Award, when won in the category Best Traditional Blues Album for Joined at the Hip in 2010.

Thousands of musicians and music-industry professionals affiliated with a group called the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, or NARAS, pick the winners.

Sir Georg Solti (October 21, 1912 – September 5, 1997) won 31 Grammy Awards. A Hungarian-born orchestral and operatic conductor, Solti was a long-serving music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Solti held the record for the person with the most Grammy Awards until the 2023 ceremony, when BeyoncĂ© took home her 32nd award.

President Obama has won the Grammy for Best Spoken Word Album twice - for Dreams From My Father in 2006 and The Audacity Of Hope in 2008. Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton have also picked up Grammys for best spoken word album.

18-year-old Billie Eilish won Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist at the 2020 Grammy Awards. She was the youngest person and first female to win the four main Grammy categories in the same year.

Michael Jackson and Santana are tied for most Grammy awards won in a single night. Jackson picked up eight trophies in 1984, and Santana earned their eight in 2000.
