The Pentagon was dedicated in Arlington, Virginia on January 15, 1943. Construction took just 16 months. It is the headquarters of the United States Department of Defense.

On September 11, 2001, exactly 60 years after the Pentagon's construction began, American Airlines Flight 77 was hijacked by Islam terrorists and flown into the western side of the building, killing 189 people. It was the first significant foreign attack on Washington's governmental facilities since the city was burned by the British and Canadians during the War of 1812.

The world's largest office building, The Pentagon's massive structure covers 34 acres of land and has 17 miles of corridors, plus, a whole lot of secret places that we'll never know about.

The Pentagon is 6,500,000 sq ft (600,000 m2), (twice the size of the Empire State Building) The Pentagon is so large it has six different postcodes.

The Pentagon was constructed so that no point in the building is more than a 10 minute walk from any other point in the building.

Approximately 23,000 military and civilian employees and about 3,000 non-defense support personnel occupy The Pentagon.

The Pentagon was built with 284 separate toilets when it was completed in 1943, twice the required amount as planners had to design the it for black and white employees, including “white” and “colored” cafeterias. However, Pres. Roosevelt made the racial segregation laws illegal on Federal property prior to its opening and was never enforced.

The Pentagon Building has no marble within it. This is because the Pentagon was built during World War II, and the source of marble for the government was Italy, which was considered an enemy nation.

The Pentagon has over 100,000 miles of telephone, fiber optic, and ethernet lines.

The Pentagon's "Cafe Ground Zero. is a hot dog that stand in the middle of the building. The Soviets believed it housed the most top secret meeting room because satellite images showed U.S. military officers entering and exiting the hot dog stand at the same time every day.

The Pentagon runs 234 military golf courses around the world at a cost that is undisclosed.
