Waffle iron

A waffle iron is a utensil used to cook waffles. It usually consists of two hinged metal plates, molded to create the honeycomb pattern found on waffles.

The earliest waffle irons originated in the Low Countries around the 14th century.

Early waffle irons were long-handled patterned griddles that enclosed the batter and gave the waffle its characteristic crispness and shape.

Thomas Jefferson came across the waffle iron during his time in France. When he returned to America, he brought one with him.

The stove-top waffle iron was invented by Cornelius Swarthout of Troy, New York. It was patented on August 24, 1869 and consisted of a novel handle for opening, closing and turning the waffle iron.

Cornelius Swarthout, the inventor of the Waffle Iron, did not like waffles.

A waffle iron was behind Nike's first major innovation; the soles on one of Nike's first shoes were made using the waffle iron belonging to the wife of the company's co-founder Bill Bowerman in 1974, after Bowerman was inspired at the breakfast table.
