Jack Nicklaus was born in Upper Arlington, on the northwest side of the Columbus, Ohio metropolitan area. He is the son of pharmacist Charlie Nicklaus and his wife Helen.
Nicklaus took up golf at the age of 10, scoring a 51 at Scioto Country Club for his first nine holes ever played.
He is nicknamed the Golden Bear after his high school mascot.
Nicklaus' first professional win came in a major championship, the 1962 U.S. Open, when he defeated Arnold Palmer by three shots in a playoff.
Jack Nicklaus' score of 270 in the 1965 Masters was the record score until Tiger Woods hit a score of 18-under-par 270 32 years later in 1997.
When he returned from the 1967 Ryder Cup, Nicklaus confessed to his wife Barbara that having to play 36 holes in one day had worn him out. The golf star went on a diet and lost so much weight he had to buy a new golfing wardrobe.
Jack Nicklaus won his 14th major golf title in 1973. The win broke the record that had been held by Bobby Jones for 50 years.
He holds the record for most consecutive major championship appearances, notching up 154 between 1962 and 1988 and winning a record 18 of them.
Nicklaus became the oldest golfer to win The Masters Tournament when he won in 1986 at the age of 46 and holds the record for most top tens (22), and the most cuts made (37).
Nicklaus was only the third person, apart from the Queen and the late Queen Mother, to appear on a Scottish banknote during their own lifetime. In 2005 the Royal Bank of Scotland issued two million commemorative £5 notes to mark his final tee-off in a major tournament.
He is superstitious. If his wife Barbara served him a boiled egg for breakfast and he went out and shot a great round it was boiled eggs for Nicklaus for the rest of the week.
Jack Nicklaus has been color blind his entire life. The effects were so bad he was unable to distinguish between the different colored numbers on leader boards while he was competing.
Nicklaus is a member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects and has helped design courses such as Harbour Town Golf Links. His golf course design company is one of the largest in the world.
