Arnold Schwarzenegger

Arnold Schwarzenegger was born on July 30, 1947 in Thal, a small village in Austria about 3.2 kilometres (2.0 mi) west from the edge of the city of Graz,

He was the second son of Aurelia (née Jadrny) and Gustav Schwarzenegger, who was the local chief of police.

Arnold Schwarzenegger's surname translates literally as black ploughmen.

Arnold's parents used to beat him because they thought he was gay since his bedroom walls were covered with posters of men instead of women.

After serving in the army, Schwarzenegger moved to Munich, where he often slept in a gym because he did not have anywhere else to live.

Schwarzenegger began weight training at the age of 15. He was so into working out when he was young, that he broke into local gyms when they were closed on weekends.

Arnold Schwarzenegger, had a 57in (4ft 9in) chest when he first won the Mr Universe Contest in 1967 aged 20.

He won the Mr. Universe title at age 20 and went on to win the Mr. Olympia contest seven times. He is widely considered to be among the greatest bodybuilders of all time as well as bodybuilding's biggest icon.

Once he immigrated to America in 1968, Schwarzenegger started a bricklaying business, which he then used the profits from to start a mail-order business selling fitness related products like workout instructional materials. He then used the profits from that and his winnings in body building competitions to start a real estate investing business, ultimately making him a millionaire when he was still in his 20s.

He made his film debut in 1970 with Hercules in New York a.k.a. Hercules Goes Bananas co-starring with Arnold Stang, a man who provided the voice for the title role of the Hanna-Barbera cartoon Top Cat.

His breakthrough role, at the age of 35, was the lead in the 1982 movie Conan the Barbarian.

Arnold Schwarzenegger was not too keen on playing the title character in the 1984 film "The Terminator. He wanted to play Kyle Reese, the good guy. When asked about his casting as Terminator, he said its "Low profile" enough to not damage his career.

Arnold Schwarzenegger spoke only 18 lines in The Terminator and less than 100 words in total.

In Terminator 2: Judgement Day, Schwarzenegger only spoke 700 words and was paid $15 million for his role as a cyborg sent back in time to protect a teenage boy. This attributes to $21,429 per word and the line ”Hasta la vista, baby” amounts to $85,716.

Arnold Schwarzenegger wasn't allowed to dub his own role in the Terminator films in German, as his accent is considered very rural by German/Austrian standards and it would be too ridiculous to have a death machine from the future come back in time and sound like a hillbilly.

The same minigun prop that Arnold Schwarzenegger used to shoot police cars in Terminator II: Judgement Day was also used in Predator.

When Arnold Schwarzenegger was shooting Kindergarten Cop in 1990 he saw a military-grade Humvee, the nearly 6,000-pound vehicle used by the armed forces, drive by the set.  He fell in love with the truck and pestered the defense contractor to make a civilian version, thus starting the Hummer craze of the early 2000s.

Schwarzenegger had a brief foray into directing, first with a 1990 episode of the TV series Tales from the Crypt, entitled "The Switch", and then two years later with a remake of the 1945 romantic comedy Christmas in Connecticut. He has not directed since.

He stopped acting to run for governor of California in 2003, succeeding Governor Gray Davis in the office. He was sworn in as the 38th governor of California on November 17, 2003.

Schwarzenegger's term ended in early January 2011, and he was replaced by Jerry Brown.

Arnold Schwarzenegger agreed to a $29.25 million 'Pay-or-Play' contract for Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines. The 'Pay-or-Play' deal meant that he would be paid in full from the time he agreed to participate in the film, regardless of whether the movie ended up being made or completed.

On April 26, 1986, Schwarzenegger married television journalist Maria Shriver, niece of President John F. Kennedy, in Hyannis, Massachusetts.

They have four children: Katherine Eunice Schwarzenegger (born December 13, 1989); Christina Maria Aurelia Schwarzenegger (born July 23, 1991) Patrick Arnold Shriver Schwarzenegger (born September 18, 1993) and Christopher Sargent Shriver Schwarzenegger (born September 27, 1997).

On May 9, 2011, Shriver and Schwarzenegger ended their relationship after 25 years of marriage, with Shriver moving out of the couple's Brentwood mansion.

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s English accent has neutralized over the years, but he works to maintain his Austrian-influenced accent because it’s part of his professional image.
