Spaghetti

Spaghetti is a long, string-shaped kind of pasta. Authentic Italian spaghetti is made from durum wheat semolina, but elsewhere it may be made with other kinds of flour.

"Spaghetti" is actually the plural form of the word. An individual strand is referred to as a "spaghetto." In Italian, an “i” at the end is plural, and “o” is singular. . 

The word spaghetti was first used in 1849 as sparghetti in Eliza Acton's Modern Cookery. It comes from Italian spaghetto, which means "string".

Spaghetti was first produced on a large scale in Naples, with the aid of wooden screw presses; the long strings were then hung out to dry in the sun.

The popularity of spaghetti spread throughout Italy after the establishment of spaghetti factories in the 19th century, enabling the mass production of spaghetti for the Italian market.

America's first large pasta factory was built in Brooklyn, New York in 1848 by a Frenchman who would spread out his spaghetti strands on the roof to dry in the sunshine.

The Italian patriot Giuseppe Garibaldi, who was instrumental in the unification of Italy in the early 1860s, was a one-time spaghetti salesman.

Spaghetti was first offered in American restaurants as Spaghetti Italienne in the late 19th century. It then consisted of noodles cooked past al dente, and a mild tomato sauce flavored with easily found spices and vegetables.

The BBC broadcast on the April 1, 1957 episode of Panorama, the spaghetti tree hoax. The current affairs program carried out a spoof report that the Swiss were not only growing spaghetti on trees, but that they also had a shortage of the crop.

Rock music groups The Foo Fighters and Red Hot Chili Peppers had a prank war on tour in 1999, culminating in Foo Fighters singer Dave Grohl dumping 500 lbs of spaghetti on Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith.

The world record for the largest bowl of spaghetti was set in March 2010 when a Buca di Beppo restaurant in Garden Grove, California, filled a swimming pool with more than 13,780 pounds (6,251 kg) of pasta.

It is a staple food of traditional Italian cuisine and Italy is the biggest producer and consumer of spaghetti in the world.

In Italy, spaghetti is usually eaten only with a fork, or with a fork and a spoon. Many Italians see using a knife to eat spaghetti as bad manners, except to prepare them for small children.
