United Arab Emirates

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a federation of seven emirates located in the north-eastern part of the Arabian Peninsula, on the south side of the Persian Gulf. They are Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Fujairah, Ras al-Khaimah, and Umm al-Qaiwain.

HISTORY

Following decades of maritime conflict, a group of tribal confederations in the south-eastern Persian Gulf, previously known to the British as the "Pirate Coast", became known as the Trucial States. This was established with the signing of a Perpetual Treaty of Maritime Peace between the sheikhdoms, or emirates and the British, which was first signed at mid-day on January 8, 1820. The treaty prohibited piracy in the Persian Gulf, banned slavery and required all ships to be registered with British forces by flying distinctive red and white flags. From then on the Trucial States became a British Protectorate.

Dubai is thought to have been established as a fishing village in the early 18th century and was, by 1822, a town of some 7-800 members of the Baniyas tribe and subject to the rule of Sheikh Tahnoon of Abu Dhabi.

By the 1950s it had become clear the British government could no longer afford to administer and protect the Trucial States. The seven emirates set up in 1952 on British advice, the Trucial Council, consisting of all seven sheikdoms, with a view to eventually establishing a federation.

Oil was discovered in the Trucial States in the 1960s. They became very rich through the exploitation of the oil deposits and soon enough, schools, hospitals and other infrastructure followed.

When the British-Trucial Sheikhdoms treaty expired on December 1, 1971, they became fully independent. Immediately following the British withdrawal from its treaty obligations, on December 2, 1971, at the Dubai Guesthouse, now known as Union House, six of the emirates agreed to enter into a union called the United Arab Emirates. The seventh, Ras Al Khaimah, joined the federation the following year.

The flag of the United Arab Emirates contains the Pan-Arab colors red, green, white, and black. More than a thousand entries were submitted into a competition to design the new country's flag, and after a process of elimination, it was the design of Abdullah Mohammed Al Maainah that was chosen as the winning entry. The flag was first hoisted above Mushrif Palace on December 2, 1971.

Emirates' maiden flight, K600, departed Dubai International for Karachi on October 25, 1985. The airline started with only two aircraft and $10 million in March 1985. Their goal was to launch the airline within five months. It is now the largest airline in the Middle East, operating over 3,600 flights per week from Dubai International Airport, to more than 140 cities in 81 countries across six continents.
