In 1892 the St Petersburg Opera commissioned Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky to compose the music to accompany an adaption of their ballet adaption of the 1816 German story, E.T.A. Hoffmann's The Nutcracker and the Mouse King. The Nutcracker ballet was premièred at the Imperial Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg on December 18, 1892.
