Cologne

Cologne was founded by the Romans in the year 50AD, but before that, it was a Roman castle ("castellum") and a town with inhabitants of the local German tribe named Ubier at least for 100 years

The Cologne Cathedral is the largest cathedral in northern Europe. Built in the Gothic style, it was begun in 1248 on the site of an older church. Construction was completed on August 14, 1880, 632 years after it had begun. For the next four years, it was the tallest structure in the world.

Cologne Cathedral is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Germany. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996, the cathedral attracts millions of visitors every year and is a significant part of the city's history and culture.

Eau de Cologne, a mildly perfumed toilet water, has been made in Cologne since 1709. The original recipe, created by an Italian perfumer named Giovanni Maria Farina, was a blend of citrus oils and was intended to be used as a refreshing and invigorating splash. Today, eau de cologne is a widely used type of fragrance and can be found in a variety of scents and strengths.

One of the first bombing missions was in early October 1914 when  British planes, taking off from Dunkirk, bombed Cologne railway station.

People in Cologne and nearby have their own language. They call it Kölsch. During carnival time it even appears on nationwide broadcasts.
