Pain

Most pain starts when part of the body is hurt. The pain or discomfort is caused by messages sent to the brain, which travels along the nerve as electrical impulses. Those messages tell the brain that the body is being damaged. The message that the nerve sends to the brain is called nociception.

Pain is not just the message the nerve sends to the brain. It is the bad emotion felt because of that damage.

Hippocrates believed that pain was due to an imbalance in vital fluids.

Justin O. Schmidt (born 1947), an entomologist at the Carl Hayden Bee Research Center in Arizona created the ''Schmidt sting pain index''. This scale rates the pain from stings of ants, wasps and bees. While getting stung by a warrior wasp, he told to himself: ''Torture. You are chained in the flow of an active volcano. Why did I start this list?''

Giving birth is the second most painful thing a human can experience – The first is being burned alive.

Pain travels through our bodies at a very speedy 170 miles per second.

Rubbing an injury right after it happens alleviates pain because the spinal chord preferentially forwards pressure signals to the brain over pain signals.

Americans consume 80% of the world's painkillers.

Members of the Italian Marsili family have an unusually low sensitivity to pain due to a genetic mutation. Family members can suffer burns and broken bones while feeling virtually no pain and they do not need any sort of anesthesia during surgery.
