Pornography

John Cleland's 1748 erotic novel Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure (popularly known as Fanny Hill) is considered the first original English prose pornography. The publishers were charged with "corrupting the King's subjects."

The 1857 English Obscene Publications Act was the world's first law criminalizing pornography. The Act, which applied to the United Kingdom and Ireland, made the sale of obscene material a statutory offence, giving the courts power to seize and destroy offending material.

The first American law criminalizing pornography was the Comstock Act of 1873, which made it illegal to send any "obscene, lewd, and/or lascivious" materials through the mail.

In 1969, Denmark became the first country in the world to legalize pornography.

Strip club owner Larry Flynt published the first issue of his pornographic magazine Hustler in July 1974. Although the first few issues went largely unnoticed, within a year the magazine became highly lucrative.

Ruth Carter Stapleton, the sister of President Jimmy Carter, visited Larry Flynt at a time he was encountering legal problems. Encouraged by her counsel, Flint became a born-again Christian, and began including Christian inspired articles in his Hustler magazines. This angered Christian and religious fundamentalist groups, who were upset at his mixture of the spiritual and profane. However, Flynt renounced his Christian faith after he was shot by a sniper outside a courthouse in Lawrenceville, Georgia, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down and in constant pain.

A study in Canada on the effects of pornography in 2013 had to be abandoned when researchers could not find any men who had not seen any.
