HISTORY

Twitter was created on March 21, 2006 and originally launched with the name Twttr. The first tweet was posted by co-founder Jack Dorsey and said: "Just setting up my twttr." . It was launched on July 15th of that year.

Later the company decided to change the name to Twitter but that domain name was already in use by someone else so the company paid $7,500 to purchase the name.

One of the names considered for "Twitter" was "Friendstalker."

The hashtag (#) feature on Twitter, which groups tweets by subject, debuted in August 2007 - over a year after the the social networking site was created.

Tweets were originally restricted to 140 characters, but on November 7, 2017, Twitter doubled the character limit to 280 for all languages except Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. Twitter made the decision to double the character limit in order to give users more space to express themselves. The company said that it had seen a trend of users cramming their thoughts into 140 characters, which was leading to less expressive and more frustrating tweets.

The change to the character limit was controversial at first, with some users arguing that it would lead to longer and more difficult-to-read tweets. However, Twitter said that it had seen a positive response from users since making the change. The company said that more people were tweeting, and that tweets were more expressive and engaging.

On April 25, 2022 Twitter's board of directors unanimously accepted business magnate Elon Musk's buyout offer of $44 billion, with the company set to be privatized. In July 2022, Musk announced that he would be making some changes to Twitter, including making the platform more open to free speech and adding new features. Musk completed his acquisition of the platform on October 27, 2022.

Elon Musk announced on July 23, 2023 that he would be rebranding Twitter to X and that the Twitter bird logo would be phased out. He said that the new name and logo would better reflect his vision for the company, which is to make it an "everything app".
