Meatball

A meatball is meat that is ground up, mixed with other ingredients such as bread crumbs, minced onion, eggs, butter, and seasoning, then shaped like a ball. They easily move from appetizer to side dish to the main dish.


The most commonly accepted theory is that meatballs come from Ancient Persia. Kofta is a type of meatball, which has many variations of preparation but essentially means pounded meat. The word kofta is derived from Persian kūfta.

The ancient Roman cookbook Apicius included many recipes concerning balls of meat.

During the Spanish Inquisition, meatballs, or albondigas, were made with pork and other ground meats, then served to Jews who were secretly trying to pass as Christian converts. When the host announced the true contents of the non-Kosher meatballs, if any guests refused to eat those meatballs, or spat them out, they were immediately arrested and prosecuted.

A huge 1757 lb (797 kg) meatball made by The Italian-American Club of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina holds the record for world’s largest meatball. Special equipment had to be custom-made and it took a week to cook the meatball, which was made in November 2017.

National Meatball Day is celebrated each year on March 9th.

In Turkey, meatballs are called köfte and are extremely popular, there over 80 different versions with a variety of shapes – not necessarily round. Each type made just a bit differently according to its region of origin.

Indonesian meatballs are served in a bowl, with noodles, beancurd, eggs, and possibly fried meat to boot.

Grecian meatballs are fried, and and usually include within the mix of bread, onions, parsley and mint leaf.

An average of 1,836,000 meatballs are eaten daily in all of Ikea’s 313 stores worldwide.

Before they approached George Foreman as a spokesman, the makers of the "George Foreman Grill" had previously considered Hulk Hogan. He however decided to pitch the "Hulkamania Meatball Maker" instead.
