Bronchitis

Chronic bronchitis is a type of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) characterized by a persistent cough that produces mucus for at least three months in two consecutive years.

It's often caused by long-term exposure to irritants like cigarette smoke, air pollution, or industrial dust.
Chronic bronchitis is a serious condition that requires medical management to control symptoms and prevent complications.

The individuals who suffer with frequent flu and colds often tend to suffer with this condition.

Acute bronchitis is known for the hacking cough it brings. But did you know this cough can linger for weeks after the infection itself has cleared?

While some might think antibiotics are the go-to treatment, in most cases (around 90%), bronchitis is caused by viruses, and antibiotics only fight bacteria. So, rest and fluids are usually the best remedy.

Bronchitis is most common during the winter months, often piggybacking on a cold or the flu.

Acute and chronic bronchitis are two different beasts. Acute bronchitis is a short-term infection, while chronic bronchitis is a long-term condition often linked to smoking.

Young children and older adults are more susceptible to bronchitis due to their developing or weakening immune systems..

A simple home remedy to fight back this disease is placing wet blankets and towels in varied places in the house to increase the humidity there.

Complications of bronchitis can include pneumonia, exacerbation of underlying lung conditions like asthma or COPD, and in severe cases, respiratory failure.

Credit for describing bronchitis in 1808 goes to Charles Badham. He's not just credited with the discovery, but also for coining the term "bronchitis" itself.  Badham's work in 1808 marked a turning point. Previously, respiratory ailments were often lumped together under broad categories. Badham's description helped distinguish bronchitis as a specific condition, paving the way for further research and understanding.

The poet Robert Browning died at his home in the Palazzo Rezzonicoin, Venice, of bronchitis on December 12, 1889.
