Jaguar's business was founded by Blackpool engineer William Lyons as the Swallow Sidecar Company in 1922, originally making motorcycle sidecars.
Under the ownership of S. S. Cars Limited the business extended to complete cars. The first Jaguar sports car was built in 1935. Lyons felt that his new range needed a name befitting its power and grace, and so the Jaguar was born.
The name S. S. Cars was changed to "Jaguar" in 1945 to avoid confusion with the Nazi SS.
William Lyons had three children: Patricia, who became a champion rally driver; Mary, who bred horses; and John, who died in a crash on his way to the Le Mans 24-hour race in 1955.
Originally developed as a racer, the E-type Jaguar was subsequently adapted for use on British roads, and became a symbol of the swinging Sixties. Some models were able to top the 150mph milestone.
The XJ220 was launched in 1992. Jaguar’s first supercar, its top speed of 217mph made it the fastest production car in the world. Only 271 were made.
Jaguar Cars has been, owned by the Indian company Tata Motors since 2008.
