The Jesus Film

In 1979 The Jesus film was released. Commissioned by Bill Bright of Campus Crusade for Christ for evangelism purposes, it is a feature length film based on St Luke's Gospel.

Though it flopped at the American box office, in 1981 Bill Bright embarked on a project to translate the movie into other languages. He also encouraged the distribution of the film to missionaries around the world to enable them to utilize it as an evangelism tool. The first translation was done for the Tagalog-speaking people of the Philippines

The Jesus Film has now been translated (at the time of writing) into nearly 1,000 languages, making it the most translated movie in history. It is also the most-watched feature film ever having been viewed over 5 billion times by over 3 billion people, many of whom have never seen a movie before.
