The Grapes Of Wrath

The Grapes Of Wrath was written by John Steinbeck and first published on April 14, 1939.

The New York Times review said of the book: "Steinbeck has written a novel from the depths of his heart with a sincerity seldom equaled".

The title came from "The Battle Hymn of the Republic": “Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord: He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored.”

John Steinbeck was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for The Grapes of Wrath on May 6, 1940.

A celebrated Hollywood movie version, starring Henry Fonda and directed by John Ford, was made in 1940.

The Grapes of Wrath movie was allowed in Soviet cinemas to show the "cruel" nature of capitalism but quickly withdrawn as Soviets were amazed that even poor people in America owned cars.

In 1996, a book about hangovers was published under the title The Wrath Of Grapes.

In the first 75 years since it was published, The Grapes of Wrath has sold 14 million copies.
