Hand

The ancient Hittites of Western Asia cleaned their hands with plant ashes, dissolved in water.

A German knight named Götz von Berlichingen lost his right arm when enemy cannon fire forced his own sword against him in 1504. He had two mechanical hands made for him, capable of holding a shield to a feathered pen. From then n, he was known as Götz of the Iron Hand.

In 1589 John Stubbs was sentenced by Queen Elizabeth I of England to have his hand severed for seditious writing. Before the axe fell, he cried out, "My calamity is at hand!" - thus becoming the only known victim of Elizabeth to incorporate a pun at his dismemberment. Stubbs then fainted.

It took Austrian Johann Hurlinger 55 days to walk on his hands from Vienna to Paris in 1900. A distance of 870 miles. he ‘walked’ for ten hours a day, averaging 1.58 miles an hour.
