The heaviest dog on record is an Old English Mastiff from London named Zorba, who was bred by Mrs I Prosser on September 26, 1981. He weighed 343 pounds and measured 8 feet and 3 in. from nose to tail. When the record was set in 1989, Zorba was aged eight.

In 1979, Japan offered new British prime minister Margaret Thatcher 20 "karate ladies" for protection at an economic summit. She declined.

The highest concentration of redheads worldwide is in Scotland with 13%, followed by Ireland with 10%.

Happy Birthday September 26

Tennis player Serena Williams was born in Saginaw, Michigan on September 26, 1981 to Oracene Price and Richard Williams. She is regarded by many as the greatest-ever female tennis star, having captured 23 Grand Slam singles titles to go along with 14 doubles titles alongside her sister Venus Williams. Her total of 23 Grand Slam singles titles is second on the all-time list behind Margaret Court (24).

Today is Johnny Appleseed Day, a day that commemorates the birth of John Chapman, a pioneer nurseryman that was responsible for introducing apple trees to large parts of Pennsylvania, Ontario, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois.

John “Johnny Appleseed” Chapman was born in Leominster, Massachusetts on September 26, 1774. His birthplace has a granite marker, and the street is called Johnny Appleseed Lane.

John became a frontier missionary and pioneer nurseryman who introduced apple trees to the Great Lakes area. After collecting apple seeds from cider presses in western Pennsylvania he embarked on a long trek westward, walking barefoot, planting a series of apple nurseries from Pennsylvania to central Ohio and beyond.

He preached the gospel as he traveled, and during his travels he converted many Native Americans, whom he admired.

Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft (DMG) registered the Mercedes name on September 26, 1902. The symbol of Mercedes-Benz is a three-pointed star inside of a circle and was designed by Gottlieb Daimler. The three points of the star stand for land, air and sea because Daimler's engines were used not only in cars and trucks but in airplanes and boats. The symbol was first used in 1909.

A biscuit taken from the Titanic before her ill-fated maiden voyage fetched £3,525 at an auction in London on September 25, 2001. It was taken from a party held on the Titanic in Southampton by Captain Morris Harvey-Clarke, before it sailed in April 1912. The Spillers and Bakers pilot biscuit – a type of cracker made from flour and water – was described in the catalog as “in almost perfect condition with signs of moulding”.

In 1977 Mrs. James Duck of Memphis became history's fastest mother. Her triplets were born naturally in under two minutes.

Leonardo Da Vinci created a forced air central heating system for a castle in Milan in the late 15th century.

Happy Birthday September 25

The Macon, Georgia, slave William Craft was born on September 25, 1824. He and Ellen Craft escaped to the North in December 1848 by traveling openly by train and steamboat, arriving in Philadelphia on Christmas Day. Ellen, who was light skinned, dressed as a white male printer with a sling to hide the fact that she could not write and passed as William's slave owner. Eventually, they fled to Liverpool, England. The Crafts published a written account, Running a Thousand Miles for Freedom; Or, The Escape of William and Ellen Craft from Slavery, which reached wide audiences in Great Britain and the United States.

The Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich was born at Podolskaya street in Saint Petersburg, Russia on September 25, 1906 to a biologist father and engineer mother. Shostakovich achieved fame in the Soviet Union under the patronage of Soviet chief of staff Mikhail Tukhachevsky, but later had a contentious relationship with the government. His oeuvre included 15 symphonies, six concerti, 15 string quartets, a piano quintet, two piano trios, and a substantial quantity of film music.

The actor and rapper Will Smith was born on September 25, 1968 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Caroline (Bright), a school board administrator, and Willard Carroll Smith, Sr. a refrigeration engineer. Smith first fame as a member of a hip-hop duo under the name The Fresh Prince. He became an actor when he starred on the television show The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air as Will Smith, a teenager from Philadelphia sent to live with his rich relatives in Southern California.

Today is National Lobster Day. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King of Maine drafted a joint resolution in 2014 designating September 25th of every year as National Lobster Day in the USA. The day is designed to recognize not only the lobster industry but also the men and women who work so hard in that industry to bring lobsters to America’s tables.

In colonial America, lobster wasn't exactly a delicacy. In fact eating lobster was considered a mark of poverty and that people would bury the shells to hide the fact that they were eating it.

Lobster was so cheap and plentiful it was often served to prisoners. They also used lobster as yard fertilizer and fishing bait.

In the early 1900s, Lobster was considered the “cockroach of the ocean” and was synonymous with the poor – often eaten regularly by the homeless, slaves and prisoners. It wasn’t until after World War II that lobster became considered a delicacy and a food associated with the aristocratic classes.
