Iceberg

It's estimated that the iceberg that sank the Titanic started to develop during the reign of King Tutankhamun.

A secret British World War Two programme, Project Habbakuk, proposed to use icebergs as unsinkable aircraft carriers.

In October 1999, an iceberg the size of London broke free from the Antarctic ice shelf.

In 2004, the Chilean artist Marco Evaristti used three fire hoses and 3,000 litres of paint to paint the tip of an iceberg in Greenland bright red.

A giant iceberg, which was named A68, broke away from the Larsen C Ice Shelf on July 12, 2017. It was approximately 5,800 square kilometers (2,200 square miles) in size, making it one of the largest icebergs ever recorded.   The calving of A68 was a major event, and it is considered to be a sign of the changing climate in Antarctica. The Larsen C Ice Shelf has been shrinking for several years, and A68's calving is a further indication of this trend.

The air trapped in an iceberg can be up to 3,000 years old.

When an iceberg melts, compressed air bubbles are released and make a fizzling sound . The noise is known as  a “Bergie Seltzer."

Most icebergs are striped. Pale stripes are formed during heavy snowfall, and green or blue stripes when it is warm and wet.

Birds taking a flight from an iceberg are a sign it is about to roll, probably because of their advanced sense of balance.

A growler is an iceberg between one and five metres above water.

The sound of melting icebergs is called "Bergy Seltzer".

On average, an iceberg weighs 20 million tons.

The largest iceberg ever measured is bigger than Jamaica: 4,200 square miles. It broke away from Antarctica in 2000.

People hunt icebergs as sources of pure, fresh water to make vodka.
