Husky

The name husky is thought to be a corruption of Eskie - a slang term for Eskimo.

The husky's extra-thick coat lets them survive in Arctic temperatures as low as minus 60c.

In cold weather, Siberian husky noses can change color from black to light brown or pink.

Huskies make terrible watch dogs because they rarely bark, instead they make a wolf-like howling sound.

In sled races they can manage speeds of 20 mph for 20 to 30 miles every day.

The 1925 Great Race of Mercy, was a transport of medicine by dog sled relay across the U.S. territory of Alaska by 20 mushers and about 150 sled dogs. They saved many children's lives in the small town of Nome by transporting diphtheria antitoxin when no one else could.

Most Huskies in the US are descended from the sled dog team that completed the most grueling part of the 1925 Great Race of Mercy. Afterwards, the team was sold to a kennel in Poland Spring, Maine.

A sled dog race was included in the 1932 Winter Olympics; Canada won the gold medal.

Huskies need to train to be better distance runners. While the average pet husky can only run between 10 to 20 miles (16-32 kms) a day, a well-conditioned race husky can run for 11 hours straight making up to 125 miles (201 kms). They can repeat this distance for up to 10 days in a row.
