Ibiza

Ibiza is an island which is part of the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean Sea. It was founded in 654BC, by Phoenician settlers who called it 'Ibossim' and dedicated it dedicated to Bes, the god of music and dance.

The mystical isle of Es Vedra off the coast of Ibiza is said to be where Ulysses encountered the sirens in Homer's Odyssey.

Notable former residents of Ibiza include English punk musician Sid Vicious, comic actor Terry-Thomas, American fraudster Clifford Irving and film director Orson Welles.

Ibiza is visited by about 2.8 million tourists a year and the airport handles 26,000 flights.

In 2007, Ibiza's government decreed that all new hotels on the island must be five-star.

The orange color of the soil in Ibiza comes from the tannin in the pine needles that fall from the island's many pine trees.

The area of Ibiza is 571 square kilometers and its population was estimated in 2010 to be 132,637.
