Anger

Anger is intense displeasure, often involving a desire or retaliation. It is an inherited response, and is common to all mammals and a number of other animals.

The Chinese have a story based on three or four thousand years of civilization. Two Chinese coolies were arguing heatedly in the midst of a crowd. A stranger expressed surprise that no blows were being struck. A Chinese friend replied “the man who strikes first admits that his ideas have given out."

Proverbs 14 v29 says "a wise man controls his temper. He knows that anger causes mistakes."

Xerxes, king of Persia in the fifth century BC, was one of the most intelligent men of his time. He once became so angry at the sea when it destroyed his two bridges of boats during a storm, that he had his army beat it with sticks.

The best man is the chief assistant to the groom at a wedding. In the past one of the 'best' man's roles was to beat back angry relatives as they burst into the ceremony - allegedly the reason why the bride stands on the left of the groom and the best man. If things got nasty, they could draw their swords with their right hands.

John Osborne made his name with Look Back in Anger (1956), which proved a landmark in the history of the British theater. The playwright was one of the ‘angry young men’ writers who came to prominence in the Fifties. They were young men disgusted at what their elders have made of society. Osborne compared critics to faulty sewage systems and described the suicide of his fourth wife, actress Jill Bennett, as "the coarse posturing of an overheated housemaid."

When Mary Quant invented mini-skirts in the 1960s, angry bowler-hatted men with rolled umbrellas beat on her Chelsea shop window. 

According to Bob Geldof, it was anger that motivated him to organize Live Aid. 

George Sweeting, the President of Moody Bible Institute in the 1970s said: "A student said to me I lose my temper but it's all over in a minute. I answered and so is the hydrogen bomb. But think of the damage it produces."
