Acronym

An acronym is if you pronounce letters in the abbreviation as if they were a word. If you read the letters in the abbreviation individually, such as BBC, they are called "initialisms."

One of the best known early Christian symbols, because of its modern revival, is the fish. Some early Christians made the Greek word for fish, ichthus, into an acronym for "Jesus Christ, God's Son, Savior."

The acronym 'LOL' was being used in the 1960s, in those days it meant 'Little Old Ladies'.

The oldest record of the acronym LOL with its present meaning was in a message by Wayne Pearson in the 1980s from the archives of Usenet.

When Abba was formed, Benny and Anni-Frid were a couple, as were Björn and Agnetha. The band name is their initials as an acronym.

RAS Syndrome (Redundant Acronym Syndrome Syndrome) refers to the use of one or more of the words that make up an acronym in conjunction with the abbreviated form, thus in effect repeating one or more words. Examples include PIN Number, ATM Machine, UPC Code, GUI interface and LCD display.

The rapper Tyga 's name is an acronym for Thank You God Always.

The word Taser stands for Thomas A. Swift's Electric Rifle.

The term "ZIP" code is an acronym for Zone Improvement Plan. It was introduced in the 1940's only for large cities, and was a signature mark for the USPS to give the impression that the mail would "zip" along faster if citizens used it.


The word Scuba is an acronym for Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus.

The word Laser is an acronym for Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation.

M&M’s stands for Mars & Murrie’s, the last names of the candy's founders.

GIF is an acronym for the Graphics Interchange Format. The pronunciation of GIF has been disputed since the 1990s. The two common pronunciations in English are with a soft g as in gin and with a hard g as in gift. English dictionaries generally accept both main alternatives as valid.
