Elk

Native Americans once used clubs made from elk jawbones as weapons.

In spite of their 500-700 pound weight elks can jump obstacles as high as 8 feet.

The antler size of elks is dependent on how early they start growing and how much sunlight they receive each day. Antlers can grow as much as an inch per day in the right conditions.

A group of elk is called a gang.

In the US, Colorado leads the way in numbers of elk with around 200,000. The state is followed by Montana with 150,000.

The Irish Elk is an extinct species of deer that weighed over 1,000lbs, and carried antlers up to 12 feet wide. It stood 7 feet tall at the shoulders and was the third largest deer to ever live, but had the largest and heaviest antler of any animal in the deer family. It went extinct 7000 years ago.

European Elk and American Moose are the same species and are only named differently due to language errors.
