Equator

By 1471 Portuguese ships had dared to cross the Equator, thereby confounding geographers who had claimed that the area was a flamingly hot and uninhabitable zone.

The yellow band on the flag of Gabon represents the Equator, which cuts across the republic.

The midfield line for the Estádio Milton Corrêa multi-purpose stadium in Macapá, Brazil lies on the Equator, making each team defend one hemisphere.

At a steady 3mph without stopping, it takes just under a year to walk the length of the equator.

The doldrums is a wind-free area around the equator where sailing ships used to get stuck for weeks. Hence the phrase ‘in the doldrums.’

The top of some of the mountains in Colombia are so cold that people can ski over the equator.

Because of the Earth’s bulge, if you weigh 150lb at the Equator you’ll weigh 151lb at the North Pole.

A difference of one degree of longitude at the equator is equivalent to 111 kilometers
