Emmys

The first Emmys, the awards presented each year in recognition of excellence in television performance and production, were presented at the Hollywood Athletic Club on January 25, 1949.
It was held solely to honor shows produced and aired locally in the Los Angeles area.

The Emmy awards were named after a piece of TV camera tech called the “Immy,” or the image-orthicon tube.

Shirley Dinsdale has the distinction of receiving the very first Emmy, for Most Outstanding Television Personality, during that first awards ceremony.

In 1962 Ethel Waters became the first African-American woman to be nominated for an Emmy Award when she was nominated for Outstanding Single Performance  by an Actress in a Series.

Roots set the record for the most Emmy nominations earned by a single season in a single year in 1977 when it picked up 37 nominations.

At 14 years and 314 days old, Roxana Zal is the youngest Emmy winner to-date. In 1984 she was chosen as Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Special for Something About Amelia.

In 1987, Jacqueline Yvonne “Jackée” Harry became the first African American to win an Emmy Award when she was awarded Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for 227.

The Daily Show snagged an Emmy every year from 2003-2012, giving the show the longest Emmy winning streak in history.

Betty White holds the record for the longest span between Emmy nominations, between her first (1951) and last (2014, so far).

Game of Thrones picked up 12 awards, including best drama series at the 2015 Emmys. The 12 awards from its 24 nominations, was the most any series had won in a single year. The previous record holder was The West Wing, which won nine awards at the 2000 Emmys.

Emmy winners aren’t just given the statuette; they actually have to buy it (for around $500) if they want to take it home.
